La. College Slashes 8 Programs
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana Community and Technical College Board of Supervisors has terminated South Louisiana Community College’s pharmacy technician, nurse assistant and six other programs at some campuses.
The Advocate reports some of those programs will be available on other campuses.
The Louisiana Board of Regents, the state’s higher education policy board, requires that a program be terminated when fewer than eight students complete a program over a three-year period.
South Louisiana Community College Chancellor Natalie Harder said the board’s decision was a way for the school to get ahead of the inevitable and gives administrators time to reassign faculty and staff.
All faculty affected by the move will stay on as full-time employees responsible for other programs at their campuses or will be moved to another campus, she said.
“Doing it this way is more efficient for us,” Harder said.
South Louisiana Community College is a public, two-year institution with eight campuses spread across the eight-parish area of Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion.
The terminations follow a massive statewide purge in 2011 in which the regents cut more than 100 degree programs for not graduating enough students.
Joe May, president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, said the state’s community and technical colleges have been looking inward over the past several years, trying to identify and eliminate duplicative programs and programs that don’t typically lead to good-paying jobs.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to take a look at what happens to people when they leave the school and align our programs” accordingly, May said.
Programs eliminated include:
- Patient care technician at the C.B. Coreil Campus.
- Medication attendant certified at the Evangeline, Gulf Area and Lafayette campuses.
- Marine electrician at the Gulf Area Campus.
- Energy systems technician at the Gulf Area Campus.
- Nurse assistant at the Teche Area campus.
- Patient care technician at the Teche Area Campus.
- Pharmacy technician at the Teche Area Campus.
- Residential air conditioning at the Teche Area Campus.
In a letter to legislators, Harder said new nurse assistant, patient care and pharmacy technician programs will be offered on the Evangeline Campus.
