Ariz. College Introduces Social Media Marketing Certificate

Two-Semester Program Aimed at Working Adults

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Scottsdale Community College is offering a social media marketing certificate of completion starting in the upcoming fall semester to help students prepare for a job in the growing field or validate skills they may already be using on the job.

The program will allow participants to earn the certificate by taking two classes at a time for two semesters. They will complete the program with a professional internship or capstone project.

“Many people are aware of social media but they may not be aware of it as a career path,” said Carole Redden, an SCC advisor who is coordinating the program.

The program is limited to 25 students in the first cohort. The certificate program is part of SCC's One Path Initiative, which will be offering similar certificates in other fields in the near future.

The social media marketing certificate will be a mix of in-class instruction and online learning, with classes offered at the same times and days of the week — Monday and Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m. — to make it easier for working adults to schedule their time.

“These are not new classes that we are offering,” said Redden. “What's new is the hybrid format, consistent scheduling, and the fact that students will be part of a cohort to better support student success.”

Students with varying levels of experience in social media marketing will be part of the program.

They do not need prior experience to participate, she said.

“Some of the students will seek the certificate to quantify the value of the skills they already have while others may start the program with limited to no experience in social media marketing,” Redden said.

Labor market surveys show a growing number of social media marketing related jobs ranging from Social Media Specialists to Digital Marketing Assistants. Many of those jobs list salaries ranging from $27,000 to $59,000, depending on experience.

Students will have access to a computer lab, writing (tutoring) center, learning center, required software applications and other resources aimed at helping them be successful. These resources can be especially helpful to those returning to school after being away, and to those without these resources, noted Redden.

“We have set up this program in a way that maximizes student support so that our students can be on a new career path in as little as two semesters,” she said.

Financial aid is available to eligible students.

Students who enroll in the Social Media Marketing One Path Certificate Program are not required to take academic placement testing. After completing this certificate, some students may choose to continue their education and earn a two-year degree. They could earn an associate of applied science in business with an emphasis on social media by taking additional general education and business classes.
