The College of Lake County (Ill.) has received a $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue funding the successful Educational Talent Search program. It is one of eight federal TRiO programs that provide disadvantaged youth with connections to high-quality tutoring and counseling services to improve financial aid literacy and planning for postsecondary education. Each year, CLC offers free college planning services to more than 800 students attending high schools in North Chicago, Round Lake, Waukegan and Zion. The program’s staff provides academic advising, coaching, mentoring, tutoring, college visits, career shadowing and workshops on ACT/SAT Prep, study skills, time management, freshman transition, career exploration, career success skills, federal/state student aid options and financial literacy. Former Talent Search student Prentiss Grant attended Zion- Benton High School, graduated from CLC in 2013 and then earned a business degree from Northern Illinois University in 2015. He credits the program with his persistence and success in college and career. “I’m the first in my family to graduate from college, and deciding to attend CLC was the best decision I made in my life. No one in my family had experience in applying to and preparing for college. Through Educational Talent Search, I met Dr. Sharon Sanders-Funnye. I saw her on a weekly basis, at job-shadowing tours, college tours and seminars on transitioning to college,” he said. While attending CLC, Grant was a student worker in the Talent Search office. “Guiding other students helped me grow as a person, from developing public speaking skills to deciding on a career in sales,” he said.
Broward College (Fla) recently was awarded a $500,000 grant to support its Get REAL! (Ready for Education And Learning) scholarship. The scholarship is designed to help youths 17-24 who are out of school due to economic, health and social reasons but desire higher education opportunities and job readiness training. Through the program, 120 students who attend or will attend Broward College this fall will be eligible for benefit. The Get REAL program was developed based on strategies which have been identified by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Labor for ensuring employment readiness for jobs in highdemand industries such as information technology, health care and manufacturing-construction. The target group of recipients will include persons who may have been excluded from pursuing education or employment goals because of health or family issues, young adults returning from military service, or those who are enrolled in court-ordered diversion programs. The grant also will cover students in the foster care system, children of incarcerated parents, and those with disabilities. Each recipient of the scholarship will receive tuition assistance, career support and assigned advisors, goal-based financial incentives, work-study opportunities while at Broward College, job placement assistance upon degree completion, and participation in events and workshops to assist with job readiness.
Johnston Community College has received a $50,000 Library Services and Technology Act grant award for 2016- 17. LSTA grants are federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services that are awarded by the State Library of North Carolina to eligible North Carolina libraries. JCC’s project aims to enhance library resources for Johnston County Middle and Early College students. Specifically, the funds will be used to purchase 1,100 additional grade-level print and digital resources. The project also includes the development and delivery of a series of student workshops on research methods and sources. The availability and the awareness of the new print and digital resources is expected to increase circulation by 25 percent and will also ensure that all Early College students use the college’s library instructional services.
