The Southwest Seminar for Great Teaching

The Southwest Seminar for Great Teaching is unique and unlike most teaching conferences. This seminar is based on the premise that college faculty are a rich resource that needs to be tapped via a format which encourages learning from each other. Thus, the seminar takes a participant-centered focus that encourages attendees to reflect upon their experiences and contribute to the topic at hand. The results are dynamic workshops that reflect the real world challenges faced by today’s college teachers with solutions based on classroom experience.
This year’s sessions begin with Thursday evening “home” groups, where participants will get acquainted and engage in a brief group exercise designed to foster collegiality. After dinner, participants are invited to participate in an informal discussion focusing on our personal “bit of advice” each of us would give to a new college student and also to a new college instructor. On Friday morning, the home groups briefly reconvene as facilitators explain the format for the expert and reporting back sessions which will follow. Next, participants will join with other seminar participants in the expert group of their choice. In these expert groups, participants will tap their own experiences/knowledge. Trained facilitators will guide the expert groups in the development of teaching tips, practical suggestions, and examples that address each group’s topic. Afterward, the participants will return to their original/home groups and report back on how their expert group addressed the topic at hand. Thus, all participants will eventually share in the knowledge generated by each expert group.
On Saturday morning, participants will select from breakout sessions which are based on issues/topics that arose at previous seminars. These breakouts are followed by a second set of sessions which are unique in that facilitators and participants are asked to identify discussion topics based on issues that arose during the Friday morning expert sessions.
Feedback from previous participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Seminar participants report that they leave with a sense of renewal, collegiality, and much practical information concerning teaching techniques and ideas on how to address many of today’s teaching challenges.
