HONORS AND AWARDS:
- Amybeth Maurer, director of first-year programs and student life at Elgin Community College in Illinois, is one of 10 recipients of an award from the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. The South Carolina-based center annually recognizes educators who enhance the first-year college experience for students. Maurer will receive the award during the 31st Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience in San Antonio. She says the center is a leading authority on the first-year experience, and she relies on its resources when determining what fits best for the college. Although first-year programs are usually conducted by four-year institutions, ECC has embraced the concept and has been a pioneer of it among Illinois community colleges. Some examples of what the college has implemented include fall and spring convocation events, peer counseling, and College 101 classes. Students in turn have become more involved in the college, participating in groups and activities.
- Twelve international students from Florida’s Tallahassee Community College recently attended the sixth annual Florida International Leadership Conference at the Camp Ocala 4-H Center in Altoona, Fla. FILC brings together international and American students who have studied abroad and are currently attending one of Florida’s colleges or universities. During the conference, students enjoyed sessions and workshops designed to enhance leadership abilities while acknowledging student leaders who promote international understanding on their respective campuses. The goal is to energize the participants while equipping them to carry what they learn to their student organizations. During this year’s conference, participating TCC students received first place in a school pride poster contest. TCC students who attended FILC were Nils Bjerén of Norway, Clarisa Castañeda of Honduras, Denia Del Cid of Honduras, Hakeem Florentina of St. Maarten, Maria Kimball of Russia, Corinna McCarthy of St. Maarten, Heewon Oh of South Korea, Polina Panicharova of Bulgaria, Erika Suazo of the Dominican Republic, Vicente Raveau of Chile, Jose Vichez of Nicaragua and Qian Zhang of China.
